Goalden Globe Awards 2009 - supported by California Prunes

The Goalden Globe Awards 2009 took place on Saturday September 19th at the Hinckley Island Hotel in Leicestershire.

The Goalden Globe Awards went down a storm with nominees being wowed by seeing their name in a Hollywood Boulevard style walkway. Supported by California Prunes, the Goalden Globe Awards is now in its fifth year. This recognition event for volunteers is getting bigger and bigger, with Saturday 19th September seeing more volunteers being recognised than ever before.

And the winners were,

Coach Award - Sponsored by Mitre

Anita Hollman

Anita always works to develop players and volunteers. Her personality, drive and passion in all her coaching roles provides a positive environment for players and volunteers alike.  Anita is currently working on gaining her UKCC Level 3 Award, with Maggie Jackson as her mentor.  Within the Academy structure, she works with other Academy coaches, to ensure teamwork and an integrated approach.  She often invites specialists to deliver specific programs. Anita has had great success with athlete progression. Telstars NC started in 1996 with just ten players and now has over one hundred members.  Training is offered to U12s up to Seniors. This season, Anita has been coaching our Potential County Academy, of which seventy five were selected into the RTDP. Three girls were nominated for National Screening, two of which were successful in gaining a place in the EN Talent Programs.  Like her, her players, at all levels, work hard, play hard and are totally committed to their netball.

Newcastle Town Netball Club

Newcastle Town Netball Club has a series of Coaches, from Level 1 to Level 3 and and Umpire and Tutor/Tester. These figures are utilised in mentoring other members in the club to help them develop Coaching and Umpiring skills and qualifications. The club has an effective process for recruiting new and young Volunteers. It begins at High 5, where Y6 are encouraged to Umpire, take warm ups and coach younger players. The process continues with older players trying new roles and working to support younger players. Players who assist are given small rewards, such as whistles and Captain Awards help to recognise players who have given something extra to the club. Furthermore, those who give extra time Volunteering, are rewarded and supported with trips to watch Superleague. The club has raised awareness of Volunteering by providing volunteers for local events and by making a video for EN to promote Netball and Volunteering.

Emma Jones

Emma is a Level C Umpire and has attended many course run by Sport England: Club 4 All; Equity in Your Coaching; Safeguarding and Child Protection; Multi-Skills, Level 1 and 2; First Aid for Sport and Sports Volunteer Ambassador Training. Emma provides team lists for matches, writes letters to parents and finds replacements when necessary. She advertises practises and fun days and promotes Boughton Belles Netball Club. Emma is always first to arrive at practise, getting out the posts, balls and multi-skills equipment needed to run the sessions. She wrote all the lesson plans for the CAPS file and contributed much time and effort to the project. Emma received the Rotary Community Volunteer Award this year. Furthermore she was selected by Dame Kelly Holmes to receive a Sports Coaching Qualification, with sponsorship from Loughborough University. All the Juniors aspire to be like Emma when they grow up.

Yosha Gilkes

Yosha plays a very active part in the community. She is Chair of the community group called Young Ambitious and Proud, which puts on small events for the Moss Side and Hulme community. Yosha also coaches at her local primary schools to help ensure exit routes for the school. Furthermore she is involved with coaching at her local church. Yosha has been a volunteer at MP Giants NC for two years. At the club, Yosha is a coach for the youth teams, that range from eight to thirteen years of age. To increase participation in the local area, she provide coaching sessions, based at local primary schools, to gain interest in young children that otherwise may not receive the opportunity to participate in Netball delivered by a qualified coach. All of Yoshas time is invested in Netball.

Chris Granger

Saucony was founded through Chris working with seven ladies who wanted to start a team in 1976. The club is now one of the biggest in the area, hosting two Regional, seven Senior and five Junior teams in the Southampton Leagues. The club caters for adults and juniors of all levels. Juniors only pay £1 per session, as many come from low income areas. Of the seventy adult members, thirty are regularly volunteering which helps expertise spread throughout the club. Chris supports coaches by finding funding for UKCC EN courses, First Aid and Child Protection courses.  Chris manages Bream Tournament which comprises of both Elite and Grassroots Netball. After two knee replacements she was back coaching after only four weeks. Chris dedicates all her time to Saucony, with no want of thanks or reward. She genuinely feels that the happiness of the club is the only reward that she needs.

Marlene Wander

In the past year Marlene has worked hard to expand both the Junior and Senior Team of Sabina NC. She has arranged a club tour in Spain, worked on obtaining Silver CAPS for the club, organised a tour for the Junior team and entered the Junior team the National Club Tournament. Marlene has led the delivery of the Inter-Island Tournament, for those of Caribbean descent. As organiser, Team Captain and Umpire she has promoted the event with enthusiasm and panache. In addition, Marlene has set up the Coldharbour Junior League in Greenwich, which has a multi-cultural community. For this, she sourced funding and organised a venue. The League currently runs with two divisions and has recently expanded into two seasons.  Marlene helped host a Spotlight On Netball occasion, where three of Kents Premier League Teams played at the University. Local T.V. and radio covered the event and promising links were forged.

Claire Kemp

Claire founded and affiliated Southern Storm NC for a year group in her school, entering them into the Southern Region League. She coached the newly formed club, taking a coaching award especially so that this was possible.  She has entered school teams in many tournaments and organised matches with other schools, some up to two hours away so the students can regularly compete. She volunteers numerous days of her weekend, holidays and evening to practise and compete beyond standard local fixtures. School teams compete in a local week night league, where after work she accompanies the team and umpires matches.  Claire organised a two week Netball tour of South Africa with students during the Summer holidays. She is happy to advise students which local clubs to join and where and how they can improve their skills. She is a fantastic role model who instils self belief and worth, motivates teams and helps individuals to triumph in adversity.

Rosie Harris

Rosie has dedicated thirty five years of her life to Grassroots Netball.  Her knowledge and experience is evidence in the myriad of courses she has attended: Umpire C course; Level  1 and 2 Coaching courses; Analysing Your Coaching; First Aid; Motivation and Mental Toughness; Safe Guarding Young Children; Equity in Your Coaching; Fundamentals/Multi-Skills and Assertive Attack/Dominant Defence courses.  Her wealth of knowledge has been put to good use, as she is Volunteer Coach at four Netball Clubs.  In her coaching Rosie uses video techniques, DVDs of high performance, a white board for tactics and music for warm ups, which help to make her sessions varied and effective. She puts players at the heart of her coaching and is hugely dedicated. She has high expectations of the players and they appreciate her commitment which is shown by them coming back for more and more.

Mary Bulloch Award

Carol Spencer

Carol was England Squad Team Manager from 1993 to 1998 and managed the full program: training, bookings, finance and kit etc. She was Tour Manager for the World Games in 1993, Tour Manager for the New Zealand April 1995 tour, England Netball Squad Manager for the World National Championships in Birmingham in 1995, Manager for all FENA matches and home test matches 1992 to 1998 and Manager for the EN Senior Tour Squad for the South Africa and Namibia Tours of 1997. Currently she is Vice- Chairman of East Midlands and President of Derbyshire.  Derbyshire squads have a reputation for being reliable, prompt, fully paid and arriving with the correct paper work.  Anyone who has been managed or worked with Carol, now undertakes an administrative role, instinctively following the Spencer way.

Officials Award

Sophie Pike

Sophie is a B Award Umpire, and Umpire Tutor and Tester at B Award and is Mentor Accredited. She dedicates her time to promoting Umpires in Norfolk and since 2006 (between March and July), she spends four nights a week Mentoring, Testing and supporting Umpires. She is Umpire Coordinator for the Regional league and has succeeded in allocating both divisions in the Region with Umpires, dealing with fifty four Umpires. Sophie is Umpiring Secretary for North Norfolk League, the CNA and she sits on the East Umpiring TSG and Competition TSG.  Sophie set up Mentoring before the Official Mentoring scheme was implemented and she now has eleven mentors and sixty two Umpires undergoing mentoring. She is known for her accuracy and commitment and has been vital in the development of Officiating in the Region.

As well as the 10 competivie awards, England Netball also presented 17 Long Service Awards. England Netball Long Service Awards recognise the contribution of volunteers who have used their invaluable experience to give outstanding service for over 25 years at a county and/or regional and/or national and/or international level.

Everyone thought the award giving was over, but little did they know that there were two special awards still to come. Karen Atkinson, current England Co-Captain was entered into the Hall of Fame and Mavericks Maggie Jackson was awarded her Honorary Life Membership.

Award critieria

Muriel McNally Award

The Muriel McNally Award is presented to a volunteer who has made a notable contribution to the development of netball at grassroots level over a significant period of time.

Rose Award

The Rose Award is made annually to a volunteer or organisation that has made an outstanding contribution to England Netball by promoting and developing netball to a wider audience. It is the quality of service which is important, not the length, and may include specific initiatives such as obtaining or providing significant sponsorship or publicity, organising a high profile event, contributing to the development of netball within minority groups, or supporting the introduction of a new league, all with the aim of increasing participation in netball.

Netball Teacher Award

Teachers play a crucial role in introducing and inspiring students to the game of netball and many of them achieve this by volunteering their 'out of school' time. This award recognises a teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of netball in primary and secondary school, outside their statutory teaching responsibilities.

Young Volunteer Award

The Young Volunteer Award is presented to a young person who has volunteered their time and expertise to help others enjoy netball. This may be by way of coaching, umpiring, leadership or administration.

Officials Award (new for 2009)

The Officials Award is presented to an individual who has given their time and demonstrated a high level of commitment to officiating in netball.

Coach Award

The Coach Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the development and progression of netball athletes. This award applies to coaches who coach within the Excel Pathway (Satellite Academy upwards) and the Competition Pathway (Regional League upwards).

Grassroots Coach Award (new for 2009)

The Grassroots Coach Award recognises the outstanding contribution of a coach who gets more people engaging, growing and staying in netball through high quality coaching. This award looks for evidence of the impact the coach has had on widening access to netball within their local community.

Mary Bulloch Administrator Award (new for 2009)

The Mary Bulloch Administrator Award is presented to a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of netball at any level by way of administration.

Community Volunteer Award

The Community Volunteer Award is presented to a volunteer who has made a notable contribution to the development of netball within the community and whose involvement in netball began outside the traditional network of affiliated club/school. Nominees may be volunteers at a youth club, an after school organisation, a holiday play scheme, disability sports club or in some other area which creates new and sustainable opportunities for the development of netball.

Nextgen Award

The Nextgen Award is presented to an organisation (e.g. club, county, school or university) which has made an outstanding contribution to developing, training and supporting their new and young netball volunteers.

There are three individual awards, which are awarded nationally and can be awarded to more than one person in a year.

Long Service Award

The Long Service Award is presented to volunteers who have made a notable contribution to the development of netball over a significant period of time. England Netball Long Service Awards recognise the contribution of volunteers who have used their invaluable experience to give outstanding service for over 25 years and have been active for the last 18 months.

Honorary Life Membership

Honorary Life Membership is given to any person who has rendered special service to England Netball at a national and/or international level. Officers of EN consider recommendations and have the authority to confer these awards. Recommendations may come from a Region seconded by another region.

Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame inductees will have reached the highest honours in their respective fields. They will have made, and may still do, notable and significant contributions to England Netball and the sport of Netball internationally. Officers of EN consider recommendations and have the authority to confer these awards. Recommendations may come from County / Region / National committees.
