What to expect at Walking Netball

Walking Netball is a slower version of the game; it is netball, but at a walking pace. The game has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level.

From those who just don’t feel confident enough for the running version of the game, to those who believed they had hung up their netball trainers many years ago, it really is for everyone.

Walking Netball sessions offer fun, laughter, camaraderie and friendship, as well as lots of physical and mental health benefits.

It can give women who feel isolated an outlet, provide an activity for those who don’t deem themselves fit enough to run anymore and offer a stepping stone for those looking to maybe one day get back to the running version of the game.

All walking netball sessions are delivered by an experienced host who was once a Walking Netball participant themselves, so you can relax in the knowledge that they know exactly what its like to be a complete beginner again!

Getting from Couch to Court… Your questions answered…

What do I wear?

You don’t need any special kit for our sessions, just clothes that you feel comfortable exercising in and trainers ideally that lace up.

If you are playing Walking Netball, you don’t need to wear trainers if you don’t have them but please wear supportive shoes with a closed toe.

What do I bring?

Make sure you bring some water and that you’ve had a snack a couple of hours before hand so you’ve got plenty of energy. If you haven’t booked and paid for your session online, bring some money to cover the session fee.

I’m very unfit, will I be able to manage in the session?

Our sessions cater for women of ALL abilities, ages, sizes and fitness! We will always tailor the sessions to ensure all participants feel welcome and at ease, and everyone can join in with the activity at a level that suits them. Our coaches and hosts will encourage you to take breaks whenever you want, but the likelihood is you will be having too much fun to want to!

I don’t know any of the rules of netball, can I still come to a session?

Knowing the rules is a really small part of our sessions and you can definitely have a great time without knowing the rules. We play lots of fun games and activities that you don’t need to know any rules for.

When we play a friendly game at the end, our super-friendly coaches will explain the basic rules to you. The games are never serious and everyone just wants to have a good time, so you don’t need to worry if you forget something. Just keep coming for a few weeks and you will have picked it all up in no time!

I won’t know anyone at the session?

It’s always really scary when you start something new and you don’t know anyone, but our fantastic coaches will put you at ease and introduce you to everyone! Why not give your coach a call or drop them an email before the session if you are very nervous! They will happily meet you a few minutes before the session if this helps!

Don’t forget, lots of other people will be new too and will be feeling exactly the same way, so just be brave and say hello.

How do I know where to go at the start of my session?

If you book onto a session, your coach will be in touch beforehand to provide you with information on where your session will be taking place, where to park and where to meet beforehand if necessary. If you’re still feeling nervous, just give your coach a call or drop them an email and they will be happy to keep you up.

Will I be laughed at if I am not very good?

Absolutely not! We have lots of giggles at our sessions, but never at each other! Everyone has been new at some point, if not very recently, and they’re always very encouraging and supporting

Our mantra has always been “No question is a silly question!” so if you want to find out more, email us at couchtocourt@englandnetball.co.uk.
