The Well HQ: Upcoming session on supporting teenage athletes

England Netball has undertaken a programme to listen to our membership and learn about the experiences within our sport. The 2021 Diversity & Belonging Report provides an overview of our understanding of the current diversity within netball, the lived experiences and barriers faced by members of the Netball Family and also looks at how we can ensure in the future that netball is a place for everyone to feel they can belong.

Conscious Inclusion Training

Following this report, we have designed an online conscious inclusion workshop specifically designed to raise awareness of inclusion amongst the netball family.

Making sure everyone can enjoy our sport and feels comfortable and welcome is everyone’s responsibility. We encourage all our members to take the time to complete this training which has been developed to raise awareness of how equity, diversity and inclusion issues play out within the netball family, and to support all our people to be more inclusive to ensure a culture where everyone feels they can belong in netball.

This online course is made up of 4 modules. Each module should take approximately 15-25 minutes to complete. You will learn about:

Module One
  • The importance of equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging
  • Understanding the talent myth
Module Two
  • Insider-outsider dynamics
  • Unconscious bias
Module Three
  • Micro-inequities
  • Covering and code-switching
Module Four
  • Conscious inclusion: How to create an environment where everyone feels they can belong
  • Creating inclusive environments

Further Your Understanding

To support this training we will continue to develop a set of supplementary resources.

Religion – On World Religion Day 2022 we launched a Religion and Belief in Netball resource that aims to help raise awareness about the major religions in the UK to help further understanding and tolerance. This document details key dates relating to each religion and provides some best practice guidance on how to approach religion and belief in netball to meet the needs of all within our sport.

LGBTQ+ – In LGBT History Month 2022 we launched a LGBT+ Inclusion resource designed to elevate understanding around the use of pronouns and the terminology used in relation to gender identity and the LGBT+ community. It is hoped that this will support increasing confidence to use the correct language throughout the netball family.

Other Inclusion Insight

The five Sports Councils responsible for investing in and growing sport across the UK, established the Tackling Racism and Racial Inequality in Sport Review (TRARIIS).

The review involved an extensive analysis, carried out by the Sport Industry Research Centre (SIRC) at Sheffield Hallam University, of all publicly available data on race and ethnicity in sport.

It also involved an additional piece of work led by AKD Solutions, a Black-led learning and development consultancy, to carry out a lived experience research project in which over 300 people across the UK, ranging from grassroots participants to elite athletes and coaches, shared insights into their involvement in sport.
