Iona Christian of Wasps Netball and the Vitality Roses.

Roses Future and Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL) mid-courter Iona Christian (Nee Darroch) has signed on for a second season at Wasps Netball.

Christian signed for the two-time VNSL champions from Severn Stars in 2019 and, after a promising start in black and gold, has committed her future to the Midlands outfit.

The 22-year-old had previously represented Manchester Thunder at youth level before joining Stars in Worcestershire.

Christian had started all three of the club’s matches following her move but lockdown cut short her debut campaign.

The mid-courter is currently involved in the Roses Futures programme and has been part of the international set up since she was a teenager.

She got her first taste of international netball when she went on a tour of Jamaica with the U21 squad. Since then, she has taken part in a number of different competitions and won medals at the likes of Netball Europe and Netball World Youth Cup.

She has since represented England A before playing for the senior side at Netball Europe Open in Belfast last year, when England won gold.

Christian’s signing comes after the news that three of Wasps’ five training partners are also England internationals.

Youngsters Ally Housley, Ruth Hughes and Megan Thorne are also part of their VNSL squad and either represent the Roses Academy or U21 sides.

Wasps Netball’s confirmed squad is currently: Hannah Leighton, Ally Housley, Leah Goss, Megan Thorne, Ruth Hughes, Sophia Candappa, Katie Harris, Josie Huckle and Iona Chrsitian.
