Oldham took home the trophy for the second year running at the 2018 National Clubs U14 Finals as they overcame Turnford in this year’s final.

In doing so, the North-West club also completed a remarkable run which saw them secure a perfect record across the two days of action at Sport Central.

Firstly, they topped Section D on Saturday morning with big victories over Kingston (36-7) and Grangetown (23-10).

They were not the only side to win two from two in the opening group stage as Tameside, Turnford, Hatfield and Woodley all started their campaigns very strongly.

One of the fixtures of the round was the Section C opening clash between TTNC and Yendys. A nail-bitingly close match ended in favour of TTNC as they edged out their West Midlands opponents 22-21.

Following a re-jig of the groups for the afternoon session, Weston Park Blades also showed their strength with a big victory over a big victory over Cliftonettes and a narrow four-goal win against Leeds Athletic.

This secured them a place in the top two groups for the final round robin stage, where they competed against Oldham, Tameside, Turnford, Hatfield and Woodley in a bid to make the final.

In a tantalisingly close encounter in Group 1, Turnford ground out a 20-19 win over Tameside before going on to secure a 25-17 victory against Woodley and a spot in the grand finale.

Woodley beat Tameside 23-19 to secure a place in the 3rd/4th play-off.

It was clearer in Group 2 as Oldham’s fine form continued and they maintained their 100 percent record to set up a repeat of the U16 Clubs final.

Hatfield got the better of Weston Park to qualify for the third place play-off.

Notable results from the final placing matches included Oaksway securing a 22-21 win against Barr Beacon in a dramatic encounter for 13th spot.

Grangetown pipped West Exe 21-19 to head home in 7th position.

In the U14 final, a well-drilled Oldham outfit led 14-5 at the half-time break and continued to dominate to secure the title with an excellent 28-11 victory.
